“So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.”
— Matthew 1:17

Before it all: the Garden

Genesis 1–11 sets the stage. God creates everything good, breathes life into ADAM and walks with him. Sin breaks that closeness, and from then on the whole Bible is God's plan to bring us home.

Four promises running through the story

Abrahamic covenant

Land, a family line and a blessing for every nation.

Genesis 12:1–3

Mosaic covenant

God's Law at Sinai: how a holy people should live.

Exodus 19–20

Davidic covenant

A King from David's family whose throne lasts forever.

2 Samuel 7:12–16

New covenant

Sins forgiven, God's Spirit and His Law written on our hearts.

Jeremiah 31:31–34 · Luke 22:20

The four eras

  1. God makes promises — and keeps them.

God calls Abraham and promises him a land, a big family and a blessing for the whole world.

His family ends up as slaves in Egypt. God rescues them through Moses, gives them His Law at Sinai and leads them through the wilderness.

Joshua brings them into the Promised Land, and God finally unites His people under King David in Jerusalem.
